David Unit 38

Children of Men
Opening scene

Spoken Word
In the opening scene of this movie there is a blank black screen which, whilst the screen is still like this you can hear the news reporters talking about the youngest person left on the planet dying. This part of the scene uses exposition, this is done to make the audience understand what the movie is about and how the later events is caused by this problem.
The scene then changes to the cafe where other characters are standing around listening to the news report. The main character ask the server for coffee, after getting what he wants he leaves. This scene uses functional dialogue as you can see the guy does not pay any attention to the news. This would make the audience focus on his character and wonder what is going to happen in the rest of the movie.

Music
In the opening scene of this movie as the news reporter has mention the boy that dies they put up his picture and date of birth/death. The type of music used is slow classical music. This type of music has been used to add emotion to the scene this might be used to show the audience that the boy dying has upset most people left on the planet.
The music in this scene is diegetic, as the picture of the comes on the screen the music starts, this has been done for an effect, it is supposed to make the audience see that the characters in the scene should get more upset as they see the boys picture coming closer towards the screen because the youngest living boy has died.

Sound FX
In the opening scene this movie there is a blank black screen. In the background you can hear the sound of traffic, this has been added to make the scene seem ambient, it shows the audience that even though something tragic has happened life still goes on as normal. Also there is crying, screaming and ear ringing, this has also been added to make the scene seem more naturalistic and to make the audience feel like they are there.
You also hear the sound of a bomb going off, this creates emotional realism for the audience, because the noise is loud it would shock the audience and make them more interested in what is going to happen next.
